In brief

Coupang, Inc. swung to a net loss of 715.1 billion won in the September quarter, its first loss in three years, largely driven by expenses from a July warehouse blaze and the lingering impact of a 2025 data breach. Sales increased 11 percent to 14.22 trillion won, but operating loss hit 642.3 billion won. The company also repurchased $210 million of shares in the quarter.

South Korean e‑commerce giant Coupang, Inc. reported a net loss of 715.1 billion won for the third quarter ended September, a swing from a 131.6 billion‑won profit in the same period last year, according to a Yonhap report.

Sales rose 11 percent year‑over‑year to 14.22 trillion won, yet operating earnings turned to a 642.3 billion‑won loss, marking the company’s third consecutive quarterly downturn.

The loss stems largely from costs related to a July fire at a Coupang Fulfillment Center in Incheon, 30 kilometers west of Seoul, the blaze later described as the second‑longest‑lasting warehouse fire in South Korea. Excluding those fire‑related expenses, the company’s net loss would have been 458.2 billion won.

Persistent fallout from a data breach disclosed in November 2025, which affected more than 37 million customers, also weighed on earnings, the company said.

In the quarter, Coupang repurchased $210 million of its own shares, a move approved by the board under a $1 billion share‑buyback program earlier this year, the Yonhap source added.

Despite the losses, the core Product Commerce segment saw sales climb 8 percent to 11.95 trillion won, while revenue from the Developing Offerings segment—which includes Taiwan operations and its food‑delivery service Coupang Eats—jumped 27 percent to 2.27 trillion won.

The number of active customers in the Product Commerce segment increased 2 percent year‑over‑year to 25.2 million.
