In brief
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed the capture of two Chinese citizens fighting for Russia, indicating ongoing hostilities and calling into question Russia's commitment to peace.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced on Tuesday that two Chinese citizens had been captured while fighting alongside Russian forces in the conflict ravaging eastern Ukraine, specifically in the Donetsk region. Zelensky asserted that his government possesses intelligence suggesting there are "many more" Chinese nationals involved in the conflict, although he did not present any substantiating evidence. The Chinese and Russian governments have yet to comment on this situation. This revelation occurs amidst heightened tensions as the Ukraine-Russia war continues, particularly under the backdrop of evolving diplomatic dynamics, including the Trump administration’s approaches to mediating cease-fire talks with Moscow. While Zelensky refrained from claiming these Chinese fighters were dispatched by Beijing's military, he underscored their involvement as an indication of Russia's unwillingness to pursue genuine peace. He stated in a social media message, "Russia's involvement of China, along with other nations, whether directly or indirectly, is a clear signal that President Putin intends to continue hostilities rather than seek resolution."In response to these developments, Zelensky has tasked his foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, with swiftly reaching out to Beijing to seek clarification regarding China's position on this matter. Sybiha confirmed that he plans to summon the Chinese chargé d'affaires to demand an explanation for the presence of Chinese fighters within Russian military ranks, reflecting Ukraine's concern over international involvement in the ongoing war.
