In brief

A lawsuit against four experts by Polyloom seeks to prevent a seminar discussing health risks linked to artificial grass, highlighting growing concerns amid increasing usage in sports and playgrounds.

Artificial turf has gained popularity as a convenient alternative to natural grass, yet a recent legal case has cast a shadow over its safety. Four experts were preparing to present findings on the potential health risks of artificial grass in a seminar when they were hit with a defamation lawsuit by Polyloom, a manufacturer in the industry. The lawsuit aimed to halt their discussion, which had already sparked controversy due to rising evidence linking synthetic turf to harmful chemicals.Kyla Bennett, one of the defendants and a former ecologist with the Environmental Protection Agency, noted that they had not even commenced their presentation before facing legal challenges. This lawsuit reflects the artificial-turf industry's active response to a surge of scientific studies highlighting environmental dangers and health implications associated with synthetic fields. The demand for artificial grass has proliferated, especially as it is increasingly installed in city parks, playgrounds, and high school sports fields. In 2023 alone, between 1,200 and 1,500 large artificial fields were added, bringing the total in the U.S. to approximately 19,000, according to AMI Plastics. This demand, combined with ongoing legal battles, raises critical questions about consumer safety and transparency in the industry.
