This weekend, a solemn gathering was held at Webster County High School to honor the memory of U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old National Guard member who was fatally shot last week in Washington, D.C.

Beckstrom's life was celebrated as a beacon of positivity, with her principal, Jarrod Hankins, reflecting on her impact as a student. 'Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for... she was sweet, caring and always willing to help others,' he said.

During the incident, Beckstrom's colleague, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, sustained serious injuries and is currently in critical condition. The vigil brought together friends, family, and local officials, including West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, who expressed the community's sorrow and support.

Both Beckstrom and Wolfe were activated as part of a National Guard deployment that aimed to enhance security in Washington, D.C.

In the aftermath of the tragic shooting, concerns have arisen leading the Trump administration to pause asylum decisions for Afghan nationals. Authorities have charged a 29-year-old Afghan national with first-degree murder in connection with the attack.

Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom are still pending, as local funeral services work closely with her family. Support from the local community has been robust, with citizens lighting candles and sharing stories about the young woman's commitment to service.

'Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever,' said Governor Morrisey, emphasizing the lasting legacy of Sarah Beckstrom.
