One of the two members of the National Guard who were shot in Washington DC on Wednesday has died, US President Donald Trump said.
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries, President Trump said on Thursday evening.
The second National Guard member, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, is fighting for his life, he said.
Both were shot at close range near Farragut Square in downtown just after 14:00 EST (19:00 GMT) on Wednesday. Police have arrested one suspect in the shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old from Afghanistan.
President Trump confirmed Ms Beckstrom's death while on a Thanksgiving call with US service members. He described her as a highly respected, young, magnificent person who volunteered to work during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Ms Beckstrom enlisted on June 26, 2023, and was assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade of the West Virginia Army National Guard.
In a statement, Republican Senator Jim Justice expressed his devastation over her death, while also praying for Andrew Wolfe's recovery.
The suspect, Lakanwal, reportedly had connections to the CIA during his time in Afghanistan and is facing multiple charges, including assault with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Attorney General Pam Bondi indicated that her office will seek the death penalty against him.
Both soldiers were on patrol in a busy district, a role that had involved over 2,000 troops deployed to the capital due to rising crime concerns. Their quick response and the immediate treatment were facilitated by the proximity of law enforcement to the shooting scene.
