West Bank shooting leaves six dead amid escalating tensions


In the northern West Bank village of Tal, a clash between Israelis and Palestinians turned lethal, leaving four Palestinians and two Israelis dead and several wounded, marking the deadliest single incident there in months.

According to Palestinian witnesses, the morning began with residents confronting about 30 settlers who had been attacking local homes. Hand‑to‑hand clashes escalated, drawing Israeli soldiers who then reportedly fired at the attackers, killing the security guard on the site and later a nearby Israeli soldier.


The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) released statements that the “weapon of a security guard” was stolen by a Palestinian, used to shoot the guard, and that soldiers then “eliminated the terrorist.” The IDF also said it was preparing a major operation in Tal, canceling soldier leave, and that the area needed reinforcement.


Palestinian officials condemned the “massacre” in Tal, criticizing the Israeli government for providing protection and impunity to settlers. The Palestinian foreign ministry accused official Israeli incitement of fostering an environment in which settler violence could flourish unchecked. The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, called an emergency meeting with security officials and pledged a decisive response to the attackers.


The incident occurs against the backdrop of a sharp rise in settler attacks on Palestinians since the Gaza war began in 2023, following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. According to United Nations figures, over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank so far this year—predominantly by the IDF—with at least 35 deaths linked to settler assaults. Meanwhile, the UN notes 41 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have died in the West Bank because of Palestinian attacks and related Israeli military operations.


Israel's settlement policy has driven the occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, building about 160 settlements that house approximately 700,000 Jews. Palestinians, numbering around 3.3 million in the region, see these communities as encroachments on land they seek for a future state, and the settlements are widely regarded as illegal under international law.


The explosive violence, to a journalist on the ground, showcased roadblocks and troops combing for additional suspects in the area southwest of Nablus. With the conflict intensifying, Israeli forces have increased presence near the settlement of Havat Gilad, while the Palestinian side continues to call for accountability and an end to settler aggression.
