At least four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed in a shooting in the occupied West Bank, marking the most deadly single incident there in months.
The incident unfolded in Tal, a northern West Bank village, where residents clashed with Israeli settlers who were reportedly attacking homes. Palestinian witnesses say the confrontation escalated when soldiers arrived and began firing.
Israel’s military said it had responded to reports of hikers being attacked. According to the IDF, a security guard’s weapon was stolen by a Palestinian who then used it against Israeli civilians, killing the guard. The attacker was later eliminated by soldiers. The other three casualties were members of the same Palestinian family.
A second Israeli casualty – a 27‑year‑old soldier – also died during the incident, with circumstances still unclear. The Israeli ambulance service reported two additional Israelis wounded.
The IDF later cited “extensive counter‑terrorism operational activity in the sector” as part of its response. Palestinian officials, meanwhile, alleged that soldiers began shooting on witnesses, claiming the violence was a “massacre.”
A video clip shared by local media shows armed Israelis, dressed in civilian clothes, pushing two Palestinian men as gunfire erupts. A second clip captures a chaotic scene with gunshots and troops firing back. Neither video has been independently verified.
Palestinian foreign ministry officials condemned the killings, calling them a “massacre” and accusing Israeli policy of granting “immunity” to settlers. They demanded accountability for settler violence.
In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency security meeting, urged “full force” against terrorists, and directed forces near the settlement of Havat Gilad for reinforcements. Netanyahu’s office, alongside Defence Minister Israel Katz, announced that the home of the alleged Palestinian shooter would be demolished and that the legalisation of unauthorized settler outposts would be accelerated.
Palestian officials reported roadblocks and troops searching for suspects in the area. The IDF later raided a hospital in Nablus, apprehending two alleged terrorists who had sought treatment. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir called for treating “villages of murderers” similarly to Gaza, stressing retaliatory measures.
Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, 1,114 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, with at least 35 deaths attributed to settler attacks. In contrast, 41 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in Palestinian‑initiated attacks or in Israeli military operations since the war’s start.
Israel’s expansion of settlements has resulted in hundreds of illegal outposts housing 700,000 Jews, alongside an estimated 3.3 million Palestinians who seek statehood and coin the West Bank as contested land. The settlements remain illegal under international law, intensifying the region’s volatility.
As the West Bank continues to experience heightened violence, experts warn that the recent shootout in Tal may signal a dangerous shift, potentially catalyzing further clashes between settlers and Palestinian populations, and escalating tensions across the region.
