Italian police conducted a major operation on Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of 181 individuals tied to the Cosa Nostra, the notorious Sicilian mafia. Authorities described this action as a substantial blow against an entity that has continued to maintain power in the region, exerting influence for generations. Domenico La Padula, a lieutenant colonel with the Carabinieri police, confirmed in a phone interview that the mafia is still very much active, following years of intense scrutiny and campaigns against it. According to La Padula, recent investigations indicated that the mafia had not only restructured but had also rejuvenated its ranks by recruiting new members and setting aside internal conflicts to profit from lucrative ventures, such as online gambling. The latest law enforcement efforts took place in Palermo and its nearby towns, involving nearly 1,200 Carabinieri officers. Footage from the operation showcased police forces prepared for action under the watch of patrolling helicopters during overnight raids. The arrests are the culmination of a two-year inquiry targeting a variety of offenses including mafia connections, drug trafficking, extortion, and attempted murder. Despite ongoing efforts to diminish its operations, the Carabinieri reported that the Cosa Nostra has retained its foothold within the region, maintaining control and exerting substantial influence over local economies through extortion and enforcement of product dominance. Additionally, it has shown its capacity for violence where necessary, and reportedly has access to a considerable stockpile of arms.
