Carwin and his mother were celebrating their reunion after three long years at a concert featuring merengue singer Rubby Pérez on Tuesday when a sudden, small stone fell from the ceiling, initially ignored by patrons. However, that minor precursor heralded a catastrophic collapse that would shake the foundation of the nightclub, ending in a nightmare scenario.

"I remember the screams, the sound of the ceiling crashing," reflected Carwin as he recalled the traumatic events. He instinctively clasped his mother after pieces of debris struck them. Both were fortunate to escape serious injury, but the night quickly turned from joyous celebration to frantic survival as the club transformed into a scene of horror.

Carwin tried desperately to locate his friend Jessica who had remained inside as he and his mother rushed out. After shouting her name in vain and trying to reach her on the phone, he felt completely powerless against the devastation unfolding. Witnessing the chaos around him, he described people frantically attempting to rescue the injured, including the saxophonist who tragically lost his life.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but Carwin noted that those trapped underneath the wreckage remained helpless as he struggled to aid in rescue efforts. He shared that after an hour and a half he left, needing to care for his mother, who was visibly shaken.

Tragically, the following day, Carwin learned that his friends Jessica and her sister did not survive the disaster. The emotional turmoil of feeling helpless and regretting he couldn't do more filled him with despair. "It feels awful not being able to do anything," he added, highlighting the somber reality of loss amid celebration.

As recovery efforts continue and the community mourns, the toll of the tragedy continues to resonate throughout Santo Domingo.

With grief and despair lingering in the air, the Jet Set nightclub collapse stands as a grim reminder of life’s fragility.
