At least 30 people have been injured following a Russian drone strike on a railway station in north-east Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. In a post on X, he indicated that train staff and passengers were at the site of the attack in Shostka, located in the Sumy region. Emergency services are currently assisting those affected, although information on the specifics of the injuries is still being gathered.

Zelensky shared a video showing a train carriage on fire, highlighting the damage inflicted by the strike. He criticized the attack, stating, The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is terrorism, which the world has no right to ignore. He added that the daily assaults from Russia have had deadly consequences for many civilians, emphasizing that strength is necessary to prompt a cessation of these attacks.

Reports from the regional governor, Oleh Hryhorov, and the Ukrainian Railways indicated that two strikes targeted passenger trains, resulting in injuries to three children aged 8, 11, and 14. One attack occurred while evacuations were in progress, described as an attempt to disrupt communication with frontline areas. Shostka is approximately 50 km from the Russian border, and the railway infrastructure has increasingly been a focus of Russian strikes.

Zelensky also urged Western allies to act, calling for resolutions to translate into tangible support. He noted that Russia has ramped up aerial assaults in recent weeks, prompting Ukraine to request more advanced air defense systems from its allies to protect against these persistent threats.

The recent spike in attacks includes another incident last Sunday that resulted in four fatalities and at least 70 injuries in Kyiv due to a prolonged drone and missile strike. The escalating conflict and Russia's refusal to negotiate have led to frustrations among Western leaders, with calls for greater investment in Ukraine's security capabilities growing louder.
