The prophet and the mysterious death of Charmain Speirs
Charmain Speirs was 40 years old when she met prophet Eric Adusah. For several years, she had been part of one of the fastest-growing Christian movements, Pentecostalism. Through her faith, she seemed to find the happiness she’d been seeking, but something was still amiss. Her friend Anne-Marie recalls, She'd just had enough of normal men... She wanted that man of God. She wanted what was promised for her. After meeting Adusah, a renowned preacher and head pastor of Global Light Revival Church, they married within months of their whirlwind romance. But six months later, Charmain was found dead in a hotel bathtub in Ghana. Initially considered a murder suspect, Adusah was released due to lack of evidence and has denied any involvement.
More than a decade later, BBC Disclosure conducted an investigation uncovering significant gaps in Adusah's account of the events leading to Charmain's death. In the documentary series Charmain and the Prophet, former partners allege that Adusah poses a danger to women.
Charmain grew up in Arbroath amidst a tumultuous family life, suffering losses including that of her brother and grappling with her own struggles before embracing religion. She moved to Swansea to study, became a single mother, and later became deeply involved in her faith, eventually marrying Adusah.
Witness accounts from the night of her death suggest Adusah had visitors at their hotel room before he left, a detail he did not disclose to investigators. Contrary to Adusah's claims of Charmain being troubled and suicidal, family and friends assert she despised drugs and was not inclined towards self-harm. A post-mortem revealed heroin in her system, but the available evidence and the circumstances surrounding her death raise more questions than answers, leading to ongoing calls for justice.
