In brief

During a recent meeting between President Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, it was confirmed that the US will provide nuclear submarine technology to South Korea, which is seen as a crucial step towards modernizing the military alliance. Lee emphasized that the intention is to acquire nuclear fuel for submarines to enhance the capabilities of the US forces in the region. This comes amid growing military provocations from North Korea, including recent cruise missile tests.

GYEONGJU, South Korea (AP) — The United States is set to share sensitive nuclear submarine technology with South Korea, a move confirmed by President Donald Trump on social media following discussions with the South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

During their meeting, Lee highlighted intentions to modernize the military alliance with the US and mentioned plans to boost military spending in order to lessen America's financial obligations in the region. He clarified previous misunderstandings related to South Korea's interest in nuclear submarines, specifying that the goal is to secure nuclear fuel rather than weapons.

Lee argued that possessing nuclear-powered submarines would not only benefit South Korea but also enhance US operations in the area.

The nuclear submarine technology being shared is highly classified, traditionally guarded closely by the US military. Previous arrangements involving allies like the UK and Australia did not include direct US technology transfers, making this announcement particularly notable.

This announcement comes before Trump's anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as North Korea has been increasing its military capabilities, recently revealing its own nuclear submarine development.

As tensions rise in the region, the Pentagon's response to the announcement has yet to be detailed.
