US Marine Arrested in Okinawa After Woman Found Dead

Japanese police have detained a 20‑year‑old U.S. Marine, Devin Jacob Ballard, on murder charges after an investigation uncovered the body of 39‑year‑old Yagi Anna in a hotel in Naha, the capital of Okinawa.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime a brutal and heinous robbery and murder and called on Washington to tighten discipline among its troops stationed in Japan.

The victim was identified by Japan’s NHK broadcaster, while the Marine Corps said it was fully cooperating with Japanese authorities and offered condolences to the family.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi posted that the body had been found early Saturday morning and condemned the incident as unforgivable, stressing that such events create anxiety for residents and must never occur again.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo confirmed its cooperation with local police, and Japan’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass for a discussion on the matter.

Okinawa, home to several U.S. bases and thousands of American troops, has repeatedly urged Washington to prevent repeat occurrences, noting that the incident signals a lack of discipline.

Governor Genta Koja said the repeated nature of such incidents forces Japan to question the effectiveness of U.S. training and oversight, and called the recent crime a clear sign of insufficient discipline.
