US Marine arrested after murder in Okinawa hotel.
A 20‑year‑old U.S. Marine was taken into custody following the discovery of the body of 39‑year‑old Anna Yagi in a Naha hotel. Japanese officials described the incident as a “brutal and heinous” robbery and murder that demanded a stringent crackdown on U.S. forces stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the crime and urged the United States to enforce stricter discipline on its personnel. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi also posted on social media, calling the event “utterly inexcusable” and stressing that such incidents heighten anxieties among locals.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it was fully cooperating with Japanese authorities and the police, while Japan’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass to discuss the matter. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja has demanded that the U.S. federal government take steps to improve training and oversight of troops, citing repeated incidents in the region.
With tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Okinawa, incidents like this further strain diplomatic relations and fuel local opposition to the bases. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials calling for an immediate and transparent legal process.
