LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A UPS plane crashed on takeoff from the airport in Louisville, Kentucky, igniting a huge fire on the ground, officials said Tuesday. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the plane crashed at approximately 5:15 p.m. while en route to Honolulu after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

Responding to the chaos, the Louisville Metro Police Department reported injuries and urged people to steer clear of the crash site. Eyewitnesses shared videos showing a significant trail of flames and a large plume of black smoke emerging from the area as fire crews attempted to control the blaze.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft, produced in 1991, was involved in the tragic incident. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his awareness of the situation via social media, stating, “First responders are onsite, and we will share more information as available. Please pray for the pilots, crew and everyone affected. We will share more soon.” As the aftermath continues, the shelter-in-place order has been expanded to include all areas to the north of the airport up to the Ohio River.
