At approximately 20:12 local time, gunfire erupted during the annual Salsa on St Clair Latin festival on Toronto’s St Clair Avenue.
Police found six victims with gunshot wounds; two were pronounced dead at the scene. Two firearms were recovered and investigators are working to identify the shooters.
Deputy Police Chief Francisco Barredo described the scene as "very chaotic" and noted that the festival drew an estimated 13,000 attendees at the time of the shooting.
Comprehensive policing moved through three separate crime scenes, and a heavy police presence remains as authorities urge the public to stay away from the area.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed horror over the incident and offered prayers for the victims and their families. Premier Doug Ford condemned the violence and demanded swift justice, calling on first responders for their efforts.
