Former National Football League (NFL) running back Doug Martin has died aged 36 while in police custody in California.

The Oakland Police Department reported that the ex-football star, who had a prominent career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died after being involved in an alleged home break-in and a struggle with officers on Saturday.

While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued, the department noted, adding that Martin became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital where he later died.

His family confirmed his passing, but the cause of death remains unconfirmed. In their statement, the family expressed deep sadness and requested privacy during this time.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released a heartfelt statement saying they were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. They highlighted his remarkable contributions to the franchise, noting his record-setting rookie season in 2012 and multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six years with the team.

Born in Oakland, California, Martin was Tampa Bay's first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. His rookie season saw him rush for an impressive 1,454 yards and achieve 11 touchdowns. Known for his powerful playing style, he earned the nickname Muscle Hamster, despite standing at just 5ft 9in (1.75m).

Throughout his career, Martin battled injuries and faced a four-game suspension in 2016 for violating the NFL's drug policy, after testing positive for a banned substance. He later sought help at a drug treatment facility.

In the final chapter of his NFL journey, Martin played for the Oakland Raiders, now based in Las Vegas, before retiring in 2018.
