BARCELONA, Spain (FlashPoint) — James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a 20-year-old university student from Illinois, was found dead in the waters off a beach in Barcelona after going missing for several days. Local authorities reported that Gracey's death appears to be the result of an accident, with further investigations underway.
Gracey was last seen outside the Shoko nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday, where he had been enjoying a night out with friends. His family, residing about 19 miles from Chicago, was alerted when he failed to return to his rented accommodation. Following his disappearance, Gracey's phone was later recovered by the police.
In a family statement, they expressed their heartbreak and requested privacy during this difficult time. 'Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona. Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend,' they said.
The University of Alabama also released a statement, expressing their condolences and acknowledging the impact of Gracey's loss on the campus community.
Barcelona remains a popular destination for tourists, known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful Mediterranean beaches. The area surrounding the beach where Gracey was found is frequented by both locals and visitors alike.
