EL PASO, Texas (FlashPoint) — Victor Manuel Diaz, an immigrant from Nicaragua, was found dead in an immigration detention facility in Texas last week, with authorities suggesting a potential suicide at the facility located on the U.S. Army's Fort Bill base in El Paso.
Diaz, 36, was detained as part of a federal immigration enforcement action in early January 2024. Following his detention, he was previously released on parole and was ordered to leave the U.S. by a judge during an August hearing, which he did not attend.
His death marks a grim event at Camp Montana East, where it has been reported that another inmate, Geraldo Lunas Campos, died earlier in the month amid distressing circumstances involving several guards attempting to restrain him. In Lunas Campos's case, preliminary investigations suggested asphyxia due to compression, which might classify the death as a homicide.
Federal officials continue to look into Diaz’s death while advocates and human rights groups express alarm over the conditions and handling of detainees in such facilities, raising longstanding concerns about mental health and adequate care for immigrants in custody.
