NEW YORK (FlashPoint) — A tragic plane accident took place at LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada regional jet collided with a fire truck on the runway, claiming the lives of the pilot and co-pilot.
Incident Details
The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Sunday as the Air Canada jet was landing after a flight from Montreal. The fire truck was on the runway responding to another emergency when the collision happened.
A recording from the control tower revealed that the truck had been cleared to cross the runway but was instructed to stop moments before the jet landed. The crash left the jet’s nose severely damaged with debris scattered around.
Casualties and Injuries
The pilot and co-pilot, both Canadian, were confirmed dead at the scene. Approximately 40 individuals, including passengers and crew members, were injured, with several hospitalized following the incident. Two employees in the fire truck also sustained injuries, although they are not life-threatening.
Air Travel Disruption
Following the crash, LaGuardia Airport was temporarily closed, causing significant disruptions as air traffic was diverted. The airport is expected to remain closed until at least mid-afternoon on Monday as investigations unfold.
Government Shutdown Implications
Although it remains unclear if the ongoing government shutdown impacted the crash, air traffic control functions are under scrutiny due to the previous operational stresses. Reports indicate that air traffic controllers are currently working without pay amid the political stalemate over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
