A speeding car fleeing police slammed into a crowded bar early Saturday, killing four people and injuring 11 in a historic district of Tampa, Florida, that is known for its nightlife and tourists.

An air patrol unit spotted the silver sedan driving recklessly on a freeway at about 12:40 a.m. after it was seen street racing in another neighborhood, the Tampa Police Department stated.

The Florida Highway Patrol attempted to stop the vehicle by performing a PIT maneuver, but it failed. Officers disengaged as the car sped towards historic Ybor City near downtown, eventually losing control and crashing into individuals outside Bradley's on 7th.

Three victims died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. As of Saturday afternoon, two individuals remained in critical condition, and seven were stable. The remaining victims sustained minor injuries.

“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy; our hearts are with the victims’ loved ones and all those affected,” stated Police Chief Lee Bercaw.

The suspect, 22-year-old Silas Sampson, was arrested and charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding. He is currently held at the Hillsborough County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing, with local leaders expressing grief, emphasizing the city's loss over this tragic incident.

As concerns grow about high-speed chases, discussions continue regarding the need for stricter regulations to protect civilians during police pursuits.
