Thai Buddhist Monk Arrested in $3 Million Embezzlement Scandal
The former abbot of the renowned 14th‑Century Wat Phutthaisawan temple in the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, Phra Wachirayan Wi, has been taken into custody by Thai police on suspicion of stealing roughly 100 million baht ($3 million) from donation receipts over a two‑year span. His arrest also follows footage of him engaging in sexual acts with a woman in his home, suggesting a possible accomplice.
Phra Wachirayan was accused of siphoning donations more than 20 times, diverting money meant for temple renovations and the sale of sacred amulets into his personal bank accounts. Police confirmed that no money from the two streams entered the temple’s official account, despite six–figure reimbursements appearing in the monastery’s books.
Following his arrest, the monk was defrocked – a rare step that signals the severity of the allegations. He has not yet made a public statement.
Thailand’s monastic community has faced repeated scandals in recent years. In July 2024, police opened a hotline to report “misbehaving monks” after at least nine senior monks were found to have had sex with a woman and subsequently blackmailed them for money. That case reportedly billed police nearly 12 million dollars in bribes.
During the raid, authorities uncovered cash and gold bars worth over 100 million baht, as well as 35 gold amulets, 1.5 kg of gold and jewellery from Punyavee Rungrueang – the 47‑year‑old woman who filmed Phra Wachirayan. She was charged with abetting a state official in illegal activity. The seized items were valued at 6 million baht, and investigators suspect her bank accounts facilitated the circulation of tens of millions of baht each year.
The investigation, launched in mid‑July after an anonymous tip, may involve two or three additional parties. Police officials remain skeptical that any of the funds were deposited into temple accounts, as noted by lead investigator Pattanasak Bupphasuwan during a news conference.
Incidents such as this have cast a spotlight on the longstanding concerns about monks’ adherence to vows of celibacy, renunciation of material possessions, and overall financial integrity in Thailand.
