CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FlashPoint) — A 33-year-old man has been charged in connection with a stabbing that occurred on a commuter train in Charlotte, further raising alarms about safety on public transport. Oscar Solarzano is facing serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon, after allegedly attacking a fellow passenger with a large knife on Friday afternoon.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, suffered a severe stab wound and remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Solarzano was apprehended by authorities and is currently being held without bond. Court records indicate that he is in the U.S. illegally and has been deported previously. He is scheduled for a hearing in Mecklenburg County District Court on Monday.
Witnesses reported that Solarzano appeared to be intoxicated during the incident, challenging the victim to a fight before the attack occurred. This violent event comes on the heels of another tragic incident in the community — the murder of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, just a few months earlier. Zarutska’s death, which was captured on video, shocked local residents and sparked discussions on the safety of public transportation.
In that case, Decarlos Brown Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder and has faced federal charges related to causing death on a mass transportation system. The recent stabbing underscores ongoing concerns about safety in Charlotte's commuter systems, necessitating a closer examination of measures to protect passengers.
