South Africa's government has reported receiving distress calls from 17 citizens who have joined mercenary forces amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The individuals, aged between 20 and 39, are currently trapped in the Donbas region, which has been heavily impacted by the war.
President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that he has ordered an investigation into the recruitment circumstances of these young men, as their involvement in mercenary activities without government authorization is illegal in South Africa.
According to government officials, the young men were enticed to join these forces under promises of lucrative contracts. Government spokesman Vincent Magwenya mentioned that efforts are underway to secure their return through diplomatic channels.
Among the individuals stranded, 16 hail from KwaZulu-Natal, with one from the Eastern Cape.
Ramaphosa and the South African government have condemned the exploitation of vulnerable youths by foreign military entities.
This incident follows a recent warning issued by the government regarding social media recruitment scams that target young women, specifically for jobs abroad in relation to military contracts.
