Coca-Cola's Cane Sugar Switch: Mixed Reactions from Mexican-Coke Fans

As Trump announces a shift to cane sugar for Coca-Cola in the U.S., Mexican Coke aficionados express skepticism about the flavor.

Advocates of Mexican Coca-Cola are voicing concerns following President Trump’s announcement that Coke in the U.S. will be produced with cane sugar rather than corn syrup. Many, including Ivan Vasquez, a restaurant owner in Southern California, believe that the unique taste of Mexican Coke, commonly referred to as "MexiCoke," cannot be replicated in the U.S. Vasquez pointed out that just like how Tijuana-style tacos differ in taste when made outside of Mexico, Coke's flavor may lose its authenticity with this change. While Cane sugar is the standard in many countries, the U.S. has primarily used corn syrup since the 1980s. Despite the switch, some fans continue to pay a premium for Mexican Coke, highlighting its cult-like status amidst distinctive communities.
