A detainee has died and two others are critically injured after a rooftop sniper opened fire at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centre in Dallas, Texas, officials say.
The gunman fired indiscriminately at the ICE facility and at a nearby unmarked van before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No law enforcement were injured. FBI Director Kash Patel posted a photo on X of unused ammunition recovered from the scene, with one casing marked 'ANTI-ICE.'
This attack is part of an increasing trend of violence targeting ICE facilities, coinciding with heightened immigration enforcement efforts. Dallas police reported the suspect had opened fire from an adjacent building, and authorities identified him as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.
While Jahn's motives are not fully clear, an ideological motive behind the attack is being investigated, as indicated by the FBI. Lawmakers and officials across the political spectrum are voicing concerns about escalating political violence and the dangerous implications of divisive rhetoric.
This incident follows other attacks on ICE locations over the past months, intensifying scrutiny of the heated debates surrounding U.S. immigration policies and law enforcement practices.
