A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said. Russia's Investigative Committee reported that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated. He is the third military official to have been killed in bomb attacks in the Russian capital over the last year. Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, the committee stated.
One of the theories being investigated is that the bomb was planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services, although Ukraine has not commented on this allegation. Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, prompting the committee to open an investigation into murder and illegal explosives trafficking. Investigators have been dispatched to the scene in a car park near an apartment block in south Moscow, where images show a badly damaged white Kia Sorento with its doors blown out, surrounded by other vehicles.
Russian media reported that Sarvarov previously participated in combat operations during the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, and led operations in Syria from 2015 to 2016.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin had been informed of Sarvarov’s death. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, multiple military officials and high-profile individuals have been targeted in the Russian capital. The trend includes the killing of Darya Dugina, the daughter of a prominent nationalist figure, and general attacks on military leaders such as Gen Yaroslav Moskalik and Gen Igor Kirillov, the latter reportedly targeted by Ukraine's security services.
