Russia has released former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman, who was imprisoned in 2022 and reported to have been in extremely poor health.
Kirill Dmitriev, the Kremlin’s special envoy, said that Gilman was freed for "humanitarian reasons" and departed the country on a U.S. flight bound for Washington, D.C., this Tuesday.
Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey described Gilman’s condition as "essentially catatonic" and noted that he had been struggling with a severe case of pneumonia before his release. Markey further reported that the former Marine had been diagnosed with a dissociative stupor 50 days before the event, a state in which the individual is unresponsive and unable to eat or interact.
Reuters accounts that several doctors had been caring for Gilman while he prepared to return to the U.S., with a U.S. official reporting that "he seems to be in good shape."
His family has announced that they will await his arrival at a military hospital in Texas, and his sister, Lexie Hudson, expressed gratitude to President Trump for what she says was a "lifesaving" intervention.
