Russia has intensified strikes on Kyiv’s main road bridges over the past four days, targeting the Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge on two consecutive days, while the Pivdennyi (Southern) Bridge has seen multiple attacks earlier in the week.

The most recent strike occurred as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the capital for a surprise visit, heightening the drama surrounding the conflict. Military aviation units reportedly launched several guided missiles from near the city, hitting the bridges and causing significant damage.

BBC Ukraine correspondent Dan Johnson was on the scene, standing beside a damaged section of one of the bridges. He explained what is known so far: surveillance footage indicates multiple impact points along the structure, and early estimates suggest that the bridges are now partially or fully out of service for civilian traffic.

These assaults mark a new phase of the Russian campaign, aiming to disrupt supply lines and isolate the heart of the Ukrainian war effort. Analysts warn that continued attacks could leave the city’s transportation grid in disarray for weeks.
