A suspect in the fatal shooting of prominent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy has been arrested, the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. The 54-year-old parliamentarian was killed by an attacker disguised as a courier in Lviv on Saturday, igniting a manhunt. Ukraine's interior minister Igor Klymenko confirmed in a statement that the suspect was detained in the Khmelnytskyi region.
Parubiy gained prominence during Ukraine's Euromaidan protests, which advocated for closer ties with the European Union and led to the ousting of pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
The preliminary investigation revealed the killing was meticulously planned, with details regarding Parubiy's travel and escape strategies reportedly mapped out. President Zelensky shared on social media that he was in contact with chief prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko, who indicated that the suspect provided an initial testimony.
As investigative actions progress, unverified footage allegedly showing the attack surfaced, depicting a gunman in courier attire approaching Parubiy. Lviv police chief Oleksandr Shliakhovskyi noted that the assailant had fired approximately eight rounds.
Sources indicated that the attacker mimicked a worker from delivery service Glovo. The company expressed its shock at the incident and committed to cooperating fully with authorities. Parubiy served as the speaker of Ukraine's parliament from April 2016 to August 2019, playing a significant role in the 2013-14 protests which called for greater European integration while overseeing the protest security teams.
