Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect from Long Island, is anticipated to plead guilty on Wednesday to a series of murders known as the Gilgo Beach killings. This decision is expected to bring closure to a case that has tormented families and piqued public interest for many years.
Heuermann has been charged with the murders of seven women, many of whom were sex workers, over a span of 17 years. Should he plead guilty, he faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The announcement of Heuermann's intent to plead guilty comes from sources who spoke anonymously as the plea has yet to be formally entered in court. A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, where Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney will elaborate on the developments, alongside members of the victims' families.
The Gilgo Beach investigation, which gained momentum after the discovery of human remains along a highway in 2010, has involved numerous leads and heightened media attention, including documentaries and a Netflix film. Despite this, it took more than a decade for law enforcement to trace Heuermann's connection to the case, utilizing evidence such as DNA from a discarded pizza crust.
Police have identified at least six victims linked to Heuermann. Investigators used advanced DNA techniques and subpoenas to analyze his records and connections to the victims. The task force set up to investigate the murders was reactivated a year prior to his arrest, which was made in July 2023.
A significant aspect of the case included Heuermann's own internet search history, which revealed a disturbing obsession with the case as well as violent content, contributing to the evidence gathered against him.
In the wake of his arrest, law enforcement conducted searches of his property, uncovering a trove of weapons and materials that indicated a premeditated plan for his crimes.
