Rare tornado sweeps through Ulladulla, NSW

On 3 October, residents of the coastal town of Ulladulla in New South Wales were stunned when a rare tornado tore through the town, damaging homes and uprooting trees.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the tornado was produced by "severe" thunderstorms, noting it was very uncommon to see one in such a populated area. The path of the vortex was short but potent, flattening roofs and throwing debris across streets.

Local authorities are assessing the damage and clearing fallen trees. Residents are urged to keep windows closed and stay indoors until the weather improves. A detailed safety briefing will be announced shortly by the NSW Police Emergency Management and the Bureau.
