In brief

In a troubling incident in northern Peru, the bodies of 13 miners were found at a controversial gold mining site, intensifying discussions around illegal mining operations and violence in the region. President Dina Boluarte confirmed the deaths, linking them to growing conflicts driven by resource access.

The bodies of 13 gold miners were discovered in an underground shaft at a site managed by La Poderosa, Peru's largest gold-mining company, according to President Dina Boluarte on Monday. The incident occurred in a region facing escalating violence related to illegal mining and competition for ore access. As gold prices soar to new heights, small-scale mining operations have surged, particularly in Pataz Province, where the mine is located, leading to deadly confrontations. On Sunday, officials reported the discovery of the miners, who were associated with an informal mining group that had a contract with La Poderosa. Disturbing videos circulating on social media purportedly show the miners being executed, with one individual begging for mercy. However, the authenticity of these videos has not been confirmed by authorities. La Poderosa stated that armed assailants had targeted the mining operation, abducting the miners on April 26. Following the gruesome discovery, Boluarte announced the arrest of two suspects linked to the killings, who were found in possession of firearms and ammunition in Pataz. The region remains a focal point of conflict, indicating the urgent need for addressing illegal mining activities and protecting the lives of those involved in this perilous industry.
