Brad Karp, chairman of one of the country’s most prestigious law firms, has resigned from his position after the release of emails revealing his exchanges with Jeffrey Epstein, a high-profile departure in the fallout among those with ties to the late convicted sex offender.
A statement from Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Garrison & Wharton did not explicitly mention any connection Karp had with Epstein, whom the firm has maintained it never represented. Karp will continue at the firm where he has practiced for 40 years and served as chairman since 2008. He stated, “recent reporting has created a distraction and has placed a focus on me that is not in the best interests” of the firm.
Last week, the Department of Justice released a significant batch of documents from its ongoing investigation into Epstein, which delves into what the government knew about his sexual abuse of young girls and his interactions with influential figures.
In light of the investigations, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify before a House committee after Republicans pushed for criminal contempt charges against them. Both Clinton and multiple high-profile men, including President Donald Trump, had well-documented relationships with Epstein in the late 1990s and early 2000s, although neither has been credibly accused of wrongdoing in their interactions with him.
The international fallout from the Epstein revelations has led to resignations, including that of a top official in Slovakia, who stepped down after connections to Epstein surfaced. Additionally, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued an apology for appointing an ambassador with links to Epstein.
Among the newly disclosed documents was a July 22, 2015, email where Karp expressed gratitude to Epstein for hosting a memorable evening. The communications also included Karp seeking Epstein’s help regarding connections in Hollywood for his son and for advice concerning high-profile legal matters involving various individuals.
Despite Karp's departure, the issues stemming from the Epstein investigation continue to resonate within both political and legal circles, highlighting the ongoing significance of Epstein’s connections to powerful figures and organizations.
