In an unexpected turn of events, Pope Francis was met with roaring applause as he made his first public appearance since being discharged from a Rome hospital two weeks prior. The pope, who had undergone a six-week hospital stay primarily due to pneumonia, emerged unexpectedly during a ceremonial Mass celebrating health care workers and their patients in St. Peter’s Square.

Despite showing signs of fatigue, Francis waved to the crowd while on a wheelchair, visibly still reliant on supplemental oxygen as indicated by a nasal cannula. His voice was strained as he greeted the attendees with, “Happy Sunday to everyone, many thanks.”

The audience included numerous health professionals from around the globe, all gathered to commemorate the Jubilee of the Sick and Health Care Workers. Among those in attendance was Lamberto Rosa, a volunteer with the Order of Malta, who remarked on the pope's resilience, saying, “He has a fighting spirit and wants to be present.”

The surprise visit showcased not only Francis's dedication to his role but also highlighted the community’s support, celebrating the bond between the pope and health care workers.
