Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has made headlines by inviting former U.S. President Donald Trump to experience the harsh realities of life in war-torn Ukraine. Following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Usyk suggests that spending just one week in his home would offer Trump a poignant perspective on the ongoing conflict.
In a statement to BBC Sport, Usyk said, “I advise American President Donald Trump to come to Ukraine and live in my house for one week. Only one week. I will give him my house. Live please in Ukraine and watch what is going on every night.” He highlighted the nightly dangers faced by civilians, stating, “Every night there are bombs and flights above my house. Bombs, rocket. Every night. It's enough.”
The offer comes amidst Trump's previous claims that he could resolve the war "within 24 hours" if re-elected, yet he has faced criticism for blaming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the outbreak of hostilities. When asked about whether Trump might alter his perception of the war after experiencing Ukraine firsthand, Usyk remarked, “I don't know. Maybe he'll understand, maybe he won't.” He emphasized the human cost of the war, noting, “Ukrainian people are dying. It's not just military guys, but children, women, grandmothers, grandfathers.”
Usyk has been a staunch advocate for peace in Ukraine since the outbreak of the conflict, which took place just before his significant boxing match against Anthony Joshua. Along with fellow Ukrainian boxers Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, Usyk continues to push for international awareness of his country’s struggles.
As the WBA (super), WBO, and WBC champion prepares for his upcoming rematch with Britain's Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley Stadium, he balances his boxing career with a mission to advocate for peace in Ukraine. The outcome of this match could potentially see Usyk crowned a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion or allow Dubois to make history himself by becoming the first Englishman to hold all four major heavyweight titles.
