Born in a modest village in Uttar Pradesh, Najeeb's aspiration to study at JNU came with significant sacrifices made by his family. On the night of his disappearance, Najeeb reportedly faced an altercation with ABVP members campaigning for hostel elections, leading to a physical altercation where he sustained injuries. Despite his roommate's claims that hospital treatment was refused due to the lack of a filed complaint, Najeeb chose not to report the incident at that time. He went missing the very next day, leaving personal belongings in his hostel room.

The CBI took over the investigation in May 2017 but later claimed to have exhausted all leads. Investigators interviewed over 500 witnesses, searched various transport records, and offered a monetary reward for information, but to no avail. Fatima Nafees has consistently criticized the investigation as inadequate, arguing that the suspects should have faced more rigorous scrutiny.

Recently, in a Delhi court ruling, the CBI was permitted to close the case, citing a lack of credible evidence. While the court acknowledged the testimony of witnesses regarding threats made against Najeeb, it found no direct link to his disappearance. However, Ms. Nafees is undeterred and plans to appeal the decision, believing that her son's Muslim identity has influenced the investigation's seriousness.

Continuing her fight for justice, she participates in annual candlelight vigils at JNU every October 15, the anniversary of Najeeb's disappearance. The relentless search for answers reflects a profound agony that lingers for the family, as they uphold hope in a situation fraught with uncertainty.

As they navigate this tragic saga, Fatima expresses the bittersweet longing for her son, wishing he would return home, unaware of the changes that have taken place in their lives.
