Mangione faces two federal stalking offences that could carry maximum sentences of life imprisonment without parole. Which specific charges are being negotiated remains unclear. “There’s a conference scheduled for 11 am on Friday, and that’s all we can say at this time,” U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said this week.
The defendant has pleaded not guilty at both the federal and state levels. A plea deal, however, would still need court approval and is far from guaranteed. Federal prosecutors have charged Mangione with travelling and surveilling to murder Thompson.
A federal judge dismissed two other accusations in January, one of which carried death‑penalty possibility. The Mangione team, the SDNY, and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office have not responded to a request for comment from the BBC.
Previously, Mangione’s counsel argued that he should not be tried in both jurisdictions. Although the judges currently allow both trials to proceed, a federal plea could open the door to invoking double‑jeopardy provisions.
