In brief

Earlier today, Turkey's most populous city experienced a 6.2-magnitude earthquake, with initial assessments indicating no major damage or injuries. Residents are on high alert, recalling a long history of seismic activity in the region.

A series of earthquakes, including a powerful tremor measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, struck near Istanbul, triggering panic as people evacuated their homes in Turkey's largest urban area. While there are no immediate reports of casualties or extensive property destruction, local authorities are proactively inspecting buildings for potential damage. At 12:49 p.m. local time (09:49 GMT), the strongest quake hit at a depth of 6.92 km (4.3 miles), according to Turkey's emergency services. The quake's epicenter was identified off the coast of the Sea of Marmara, specifically in Silivri, roughly 80 km (50 miles) west of Istanbul.Although officials confirmed two other minor earthquakes occurred during the incident, residents reported that the strongest quake was among the most intense they've felt in recent years, with many experiencing their furniture topple over as they sought safety. One resident, Selva Demiralp, an economics professor at Koç University, described the moment as unsettling while with her family in a high-rise building. “It was quite scary,” she admitted, though she found a sense of comfort in being together during the quake. Fortunately, she noted, “We are safe, it looks there was no damage in buildings," yet concerns persist regarding the possibility of a stronger aftershock. This latest seismic event comes on the heels of two devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey in 2023, resulting in more than 55,000 fatalities. With Istanbul being home to approximately 16 million people, the city’s proximity to the North Anatolian Fault Line raises ongoing concerns about future seismic activity.Additional coverage by Mallory Moench highlights that residents are urged to remain vigilant in the aftermath of the quake.
