In brief
Despite the emergency funding, Radio Free Europe still faces financial challenges as it fights for congressional support in the U.S.
The European Union has announced emergency financial support for Radio Free Europe (RFE) as the organization grapples with significant challenges following the freeze on federal funding imposed by the Trump administration. On May 21, 2025, E.U. foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas revealed that the bloc would provide 5.5 million euros (approximately $6.2 million) to help sustain the news outlet, which has been instrumental in providing independent journalism in nations with restricted press freedoms.Acknowledging the importance of independent journalism, Kallas noted that this funding is only a temporary measure and will not cover the entirety of the financial deficit that RFE is currently facing. The U.S. Agency for Global Media, RFE's parent organization, historically offered about $12 million monthly in federal support until Trump initiated steps to dissolve it shortly after taking office. A U.S. District Court judge had initially suspended Trump's termination of this funding, but a federal appeals court recently ruled in favor of allowing the administration to continue withholding these crucial funds. In response to the E.U.'s announcement, Stephen Capus, the president of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, expressed gratitude for the short-term assistance but emphasized that without the congressional appropriated funds, the organization's future remains precarious. RFE has filed an emergency petition with the U.S. District Court for action related to the delayed funding; although it received money for April, it came six weeks late, leading to programming cuts and staffing reductions.Since its inception during the Cold War, RFE has reported on pressing issues such as human rights and corruption across numerous authoritarian regimes. Today, it serves audiences in 23 countries, including regions like Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and Afghanistan, bringing crucial information to the forefront of global awareness.
