The 66‑year‑old, who had become a Dutch citizen, was found guilty of throwing a hand grenade into a crowd of Tutsi refugees and ordering Hutu attackers to finish the massacre at a stadium. Rwanda had requested his extradition in 2014, but the Dutch justice system launched an inquiry instead. The trial highlighted the man's authority over a community of about 1,000 people and his role as a local administrator who directed the violent assault. He denies the charges and his lawyers plan to appeal, though the court’s verdict was unequivocal in its condemnation of the atrocities.

The 66‑year‑old was convicted of war crimes and genocide after he allegedly threw a hand grenade into a stadium where Tutsi refugees were sheltering, and he ordered Hutu attackers to finish the massacre with stones, gunfire and grenades.

Rwanda had asked for his extradition in 2014, but Dutch authorities investigated the case instead, eventually arresting N. in 2024 after interviewing over 30 witnesses.

At the time of the killings, N. oversaw roughly 1,000 people in the Mbazi area and used his administrative power to facilitate the violent attack.

“Only a lifelong prison sentence does justice to the immense suffering inflicted on those families,” the judge said. N. denies all charges, claiming he was a victim himself, and his defence intends to appeal the conviction.
