Dmytro Khyliuk, released from Russian captivity after three and a half years, has been busy reconnecting with family and friends as he comes to terms with the trauma experienced during his detention. Captured by Russian forces just after the invasion of Ukraine began, Khyliuk’s ordeal included daily abuse and a complete lack of legal recourse, as he faced no charges during his imprisonment.
The recent exchange, involving eight civilians along with military personnel, marks a rare moment for Ukraine, as such civilian releases are uncommon amidst the conflict. Upon returning, Khyliuk immediately reached out to fellow detainees’ families, providing those who feared for their loved ones with precious news of their existence.
Homecoming celebrations were in full swing as crowds welcomed Khyliuk and other released prisoners, illuminating the emotional toll endured by families separated by war. Khyliuk recalled his first moments of freedom: shedding tears while calling his elderly parents to reassure them of his safety.
His recollections of captivity are starkly candid; Khyliuk described being beaten and tortured, revealing the inhumane conditions that Ukrainian prisoners face. He recounted being physically harmed upon his capture, facing significant mental and physical stress which resulted in severe weight loss during the initial months.
As Khyliuk integrates back into civilian life, he confronts the reality of a war-torn Ukraine which continues to face significant struggles. While he addresses his own recovery, concerns remain for over 16,000 missing civilians, many of whom families have no updates on, amplifying the anguish of countless families still searching for closure on their loved ones.
The journey back to normalcy won't be easy for Dmytro and many others, as emotional and psychological scars from the conflict will linger amidst the ongoing warfare.
