OREM, Utah. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old Utah man on suspicion of killing Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, during an event at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson was taken into custody on Thursday night, with investigators confident he acted alone.

Kirk, who served as the CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was a significant figure in conservative circles and a supporter of former President Donald Trump. His advocacy for active voter mobilization within the Republican Party for the upcoming 2024 election was widely recognized and instrumental.

Key events leading up to Kirk’s death began on Friday, August 29, when a petition was circulated to prevent him from speaking at the university. The following week, as Kirk's event commenced, a single gunshot was heard, resulting in chaos as attendees sought safety. A quick response from campus police and the FBI followed, but Kirk succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Following the shooting, a family member of Robinson alerted authorities about his confession regarding the incident. Robinson was subsequently taken into custody early on September 12. He faces serious charges, including aggravated murder, and is expected to have formal charges filed against him shortly.
