During the rescue operation, Barbara Sartore, the charity’s communications coordinator, recounted the horrific moment when the bodies of the sisters were discovered. Chaos ensued as water flooded the vessel and panic spread among the survivors. She noted that the girls had drowned inside the boat, hidden below the surface, as the remaining passengers focused on evacuating. The situation worsened for the survivors, many of whom suffered severe chemical burns from a dangerous mix of seawater and petrol on board. Rescue missions by Italy's coastguard and the charity have highlighted the ongoing dangers faced by migrants seeking safety across the Mediterranean, where over 700 people have lost their lives this year alone. UN agencies are calling for an increase in search and rescue operations and improved safety measures for those rescued.

Tragedy Strikes as Three Sisters Drown in Mediterranean Migrant Boat Incident
Three young girls, aged 9, 11, and 17, lose their lives amid a perilous migrant journey across the Mediterranean.
A rubber boat carrying migrants in the central Mediterranean has ended in tragedy as three young sisters drowned after the vessel became overwhelmed by waves up to 1.5 meters high. The incident occurred while the overloaded boat, which had departed from Libya's Zuwara city, was attempting to reach the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. German rescue charity RESQSHIP reported that about 65 individuals were rescued, including the sisters' mother and brother. The charity also mentioned that the boat was dangerously overcrowded and was taking on more water shortly after departure.
