Rescuers say 20 people have been injured in southern Israel after the Israeli military reported that a drone was launched from Yemen.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated the drone struck the resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, prompting attempts to intercept it.

The Magen David Adom emergency medical service confirmed that the injured were taken to Yoseftal Hospital, with two individuals suffering serious limb injuries.

Israeli media sources have referred to the attack as a Houthi strike, though no official claim has been made by the Yemeni group.

Live footage broadcasted by Israeli TV showcased the aftermath of the drone strike, revealing billowing smoke at the impact site.

Verified footage on social media displayed the drone flying downwards behind buildings before birds were seen scattering from the sky.

The IDF dispatched troops alongside the Israel Police to assist in evacuating the area following reports of the UAV attack. Helicopters were also dispatched to transport the wounded to safety.

The IDF urged the public to remain in protected areas for ten minutes following the alert, while air raid sirens were activated across the town.

If confirmed to be a Houthi attack, this incident would mark one of their deadliest strikes to date.

Recalling a previous incident, in July 2024, a Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv resulted in one death and ten injuries when it hit an apartment building near the US embassy.

Eilat, popular among tourists, has experienced other drone attacks recently, including one that targeted the hotel area last week without causing casualties.

Earlier this month, a drone strike on Ramon Airport, located just north of Eilat, caused one injury.

The Houthi rebel group has been launching missiles and drones towards Israel, referring to these military actions as acts of solidarity with the Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

They have also targeted vessels in the Red Sea since the onset of war in Gaza.

This Iranian-backed group, controlling Sanaa and Northwestern Yemen, does not represent the internationally recognized government of Yemen.

In response, Israel has conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, including the Red Sea port of Hudaydah.

In early September, the Houthi-run health ministry reported that 35 individuals were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa and al-Jawf provinces.

Additionally, the group declared that its self-claimed Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi was killed in an Israeli airstrike in August.
