In brief

Despite significant aid cuts impacting humanitarian efforts in Africa, US Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos asserts that President Trump highly values the continent and its people, emphasizing the need for transparency and efficiency in aid distribution.

Concerns have arisen regarding the Trump administration's sweeping cuts to aid programs across Africa, which have left many nations vulnerable, particularly in health sectors such as HIV treatment. However, Boulos, speaking to the BBC, insisted that Trump’s administration prioritizes Africa's importance, despite reports indicating possible closures of US missions in the region. Boulos downplayed the consequences of the aid cuts, claiming they are essential for ensuring the effective use of funds. The cuts have notably impacted eight countries, threatening the continuity of crucial HIV medications, with predictions of increased poverty levels affecting millions. Tragic events were highlighted, such as eight deaths in South Sudan due to collapsed health systems attributed to aid reductions. Nevertheless, Boulos maintained that such incidents could not be directly linked to US policy. He expressed a commitment to utilize American resources responsibly, particularly in partnerships that could enhance mineral exploitation in resource-rich areas like the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has become a focal point for American businesses. Promoting US interests while improving strategic partnerships, Boulos acknowledged concerns regarding tariffs that could adversely affect African trade agreements, citing negligible impacts on most African economies. He suggested America’s approach would balance fairness and mutual benefits in future negotiations. Additionally, with uncertainty over the future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), which has fostered significant trade for nations like Lesotho, concerns linger about the support for African economies under the current administration.
