JIN MINGRI, the charismatic founder of China’s underground Zion Church, has been freed from a Beijing prison after a U.S. diplomatic intervention by President Donald Trump on the Chinese president’s doorstep. The release, announced on 5 July 2026, follows a crackdown that began with overnight raids in October 2025, targeting unregistered churches across the country.
The former head pastor’s detainment had become a symbol of China’s heavy‑handed stance on religious freedom. His family, speaking through a statement, thanked supporters and the U.S. government for the “miracle” of his release, adding that the prayers of the international community were not wasted. They also praised President Xi for his “direct intervention,” underscoring the delicate diplomacy that caused the change.
US‑based rights group ChinaAid confirmed that Jin arrived in Los Angeles after his release, marking a personal turn toward the West. The Inter‑Parliamentary Alliance on China – a coalition of Western lawmakers including UK MPs – welcomed the news, emphasizing it could herald a “positive turn” for faith communities.
Jin’s Zion Church, founded in 2007 by a 20‑person group, grew to 10,000 followers in 40 cities before authorities outlawed it in 2018 for refusing to install security cameras at its Beijing property. Since then, many of its branches have been shut down and dozens of leaders sentenced.
The police raids of October seized 30 church leaders, and an earlier January operation added nine more detainees, underscoring a prolonged harassment of faith‑based movements. Despite this, the release of Jin Mingri arrives at a time when international attention is sharp, and the policies governing religious practice in China could be reevaluated.
