Donatella Versace, the iconic creative mind behind the renowned Versace brand, is set to step down from her role as the fashion house’s creative director. After nearly three decades of leadership since taking the position in 1997, she is transitioning her focus to philanthropy and brand ambassadorship. Her departure comes amidst reports that the Prada Group may be interested in acquiring Versace from its current owners, Capri Holdings, who purchased the brand in 2018 for €2 billion.

In an official statement on Thursday, Capri Holdings outlined their “thoughtful succession plan” and named Dario Vitale, the former design director of Miu Miu, as Versace's new creative leader. The company expressed gratitude towards Donatella for her pivotal role in shaping the brand and its prominent global presence.

On her personal Instagram, the 69-year-old expressed the “greatest honour” of continuing her brother Gianni’s legacy, emphasizing her commitment to nurturing new talent in the industry. She expressed excitement for Vitale’s arrival and a fresh perspective for Versace.

Throughout her career, Donatella has dressed numerous A-listers, including Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, and is renowned for memorable designs, such as Jennifer Lopez's iconic jungle dress. She is synonymous with the brand’s vibrant aesthetic and signature platinum blonde locks.

Founded in Milan in 1978 by Donatella, Gianni, and Santo Versace, the brand has substantially contributed to Capri’s revenue, comprising 20% of its projected earnings for 2024.
