US Senator Lindsey Graham Dies After Sudden Illness
The United States Senate lost one of its most high‑profile members, Lindsey Graham, who died in the early hours of Saturday after a brief and sudden illness, according to a statement released by his office.
Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, had been in Kyiv the previous week where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The senator returned from that diplomatic visit only to pass away a few days later, a fact that was confirmed by his office when it noted that "the family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period."
Elected to the Senate in 2002, Graham was a senior voice on foreign policy, a staunch defender of U.S. support for Ukraine, and served as Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee. His work on a Russia‑sanctions bill aimed at giving the president power to combat the war in Ukraine became a key part of his legacy.
The former Trump ally was praised posthumously by President Donald Trump, who tweeted, "Lindsey Graham was a true American patriot," a tribute that echoed the senator’s long‑standing commitment to U.S. foreign policy and national security.
Graham’s sudden death has left a void in Washington’s bipartisan cohort of lawmakers, a region where his influence on budget and defense policy was substantial. His career reflected both evolving relationships with President Trump and deep‑rooted opposition to certain foreign policy moves, but his legacy as a formidable advocate for U.S. interests abroad remains undeniable.
