WILMINGTON, Del. — A Delaware man, William Stevenson, who was previously married to former First Lady Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson. The indictment was announced following an investigation into Linda's death, reported to have occurred on December 28 last year when authorities found her unresponsive in their home.
William Stevenson, 77, has remained in jail unable to post a $500,000 bail set by the court. Reports indicate that police responded to a domestic dispute at the couple's residence shortly after 11 p.m. on the day of the incident, leading to the discovery of Linda without vital signs. Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.
The motives behind the alleged crime have not been revealed by investigators, who have been conducting a thorough examination over several weeks following the incident.
Stevenson’s marriage to Jill Biden lasted from 1970 until 1975. After their divorce, Jill Biden married Joe Biden, who later became the U.S. President from January 2021 until January 2025. A spokesperson for Joe Biden stated that Jill Biden would not be commenting on the current developments.
Linda Stevenson, aged 64 at the time of her death, was known for her beloved role as a mother and grandmother, actively participating in her community and supporting the Philadelphia Eagles, as noted in her obituary. It notably did not mention her husband.
In addition to his alleged involvement in domestic violence, Stevenson is also known for founding the Stone Balloon, a famous music venue in Newark, Delaware, in the early 1970s. Notably, in a 2024 interview, he expressed derogatory sentiments about Jill Biden, characterizing their divorce as contentious.
